history article
It all started with a date, ended with a date. The First World War made an end to many things, many lives. Many men in that time had to sacrifice their lives, for our sake, for their country. And one of these men was Private Leslie Charles Edwin Beard.
Private Leslie Charles Edwin Beard, enlisted on 4th January 1915, more than a hundred years ago. That was the date where it all started for him. He left his home, his mother and father in Australia, to fight in an unknown country, to be an unknown soldier. All soldiers were seen as bloody murderers, but people didn't do it for themselves, they did it for their country. And also Pt. Beard did it for Australia.
He was young when he died when the Third Battle of Ypres was going on, only 21 years old. That’s when it ended. He wasn't seen as a big lost, just ‘one soldier’. He was young, still needed the chances of marrying, being old and happy. Just some words that form a sentence, made an end to this young man. He fought, he tried, but he was killed.
He had blue eyes and fair hair. His teammates called him Les or Snowy Beard, he was also tall. At about 2 o’clock at a shell fell on him, according to Pt. Clough. And, the shell was from their own party, it was a shell 9.2. He was there with 6 or 7 other soldiers. The shell fell, and only two survived.
He was buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery by Sgt. Masters. It was a sad burial, because he was buried along with 7 more people. It was sad, because there was no ceremony and no crosses. He deserves that. Besides that, he deserves to live.
When I was there standing before his grave, it was really special. Now, I have more and more the feeling that he lived and died.
Brief explanation:
Why did I do this? Because I really want that Pt. Beard is remembered.
The public I want to access is of all age and gender. I want that everyone remembers him, and to know that he was a brave soldier, and not to be unknown anymore. Besides his name, I want every soldier to be remembered. “Their name liveth for evermore”
